Alejandra Montoya (she/her) is a multidisciplinary visual artist, born and raised in Mexico City, based in Berlin. Embracing spirituality with and through artistic practices, she explores identity and self-reflection as forms of political positioning by embodying and
empowering ancestral practices and forms of resistance that reside on the margins and outside conventional institutional frameworks. Through feminist decolonial thought from Abya Yala she mediates between imagination and physical existence, between ordinary and non ordinary (spirit) realities, between memory and speculative futures by holding space for critical intimacy that manifest through films, performances,
installations, rituals and tarot practices.
She has gained broad experience in the artistic field by showing work at various film festivals, being nominated for the Golden Herkules of the Kasseler Dokfest and awarded with exceptional merit for her graduation show. Alejandra’s work has been exhibited in different institutional and non-institutional art spaces in Mexico, Germany,
Ireland and France. Being part of several collectives, Alejandra values process-based collaboration, community-exchange and social engagement as essential for her artistic practice. As one of the founding members of the collective TERRARISTA TV, she contributes in organizing, curating and story-telling, as well as filming, live vj’ing and video editing. TERRARISTA TV was awarded by the HessenFilm und Medien
GmbH funding program to develop a multi-sensory, audiovisual installation in the colonial archive in Witzenhausen exploring ways of dealing with colonial heritage and its continuities.
