Alejandra Montoya (she/her) is a multidisciplinary visual artist, born and raised in
Mexico City, currently based in Berlin. Her work weaves spirituality
with artistic practice, exploring identity and self-reflection as
powerful forms of political positioning. Alejandra embodies and
empowers ancestral practices as forms of resistance that exist on the
margins, outside conventional institutional frameworks. Through the
lens of feminist decolonial thought from Abya Yala, she navigates the
spaces between imagination and physical existence, between ordinary
and non-ordinary (spiritual) realities, and between memory and
ecocentric narratives. Her work holds space for critical intimacy,
manifesting through films, performances, installations, rituals, and
tarot practices.
Alejandra has gained broad experience in the artistic field,
showcasing her work at various film festivals, where she was
nominated for the Golden Herkules at Kasseler Dokfest and awarded
exceptional merit for her graduation show. Her art has been exhibited
in both institutional and non-institutional spaces across Mexico,
Germany, Ireland, and France. As a founding member of the collective
TERRARISTA TV, she plays a pivotal role in organizing, curating,
storytelling, filming, live VJing, and video editing. TERRARISTA TV
was recognized by the HessenFilm und Medien GmbH funding program to
develop a multi-sensory, audiovisual installation in the colonial
archive in Witzenhausen, exploring the ongoing impacts of colonial
heritage.
In her recent work, Alejandra
integrates AI-generated imagery into her practice. She developed a
visual show and video mapping for the Detect Classic Festival 2024
and is currently creating a visual live performance for Diana Mora’s
ballet, Le printemps du Sacre,
set to premiere in Autumn 2024.
