Alejandra Montoya (she/her) is a multidisciplinary visual artist from
Mexico City, based in Berlin. Her work explores spirituality and
ancestral practices as tools for self-reflection, identity, and
political resistance. Using film, ai, live visuals,

installation,

rituals and tarot, she connects feminist decolonial perspectives
with imagination, memory, and speculative futures, creating spaces
for critical intimacy.

She holds degrees in
professional photography from Escuela Activa de Fotografia in Mexico
City and in Fine Arts from the Kunsthochschule Kassel in Germany. Her
work has been shown at international film festivals, earning her
several Golden Herkules nominations at Kasseler Dokfest and an
exceptional merit award for her graduation show. Exhibitions of her
work span institutional and independent spaces in Mexico, Germany,
Ireland, and France. She is also a co-founder of the media art
collective TERRARISTA TV, where she contributes to curating,
storytelling, and visual production. The collective received funding
from HessenFilm und Medien GmbH to create a multi-sensory
installation in Witzenhausen’s colonial archive, exploring colonial
heritage and its ongoing impacts.

IDENTIDAD DE HUMO
multimedia installation, performance, 4k video, spanish w/english subtitles, flame sensor, candles, 2026

Identidad
de Humo is a multimedia installation grounded in Mexica cosmogony
and the teachings of Tezcatlipoca, the Smoking Mirror, where
perception is understood as the smoke of that which is, in essence,
Consciousness.

The
work unfolds as a living portrait in which the artist voluntarily
embodies Coatlicue, encountering her ancestors through somatic
practice initiated by spiritual work with the obsidian mirror. Coatlicue, the monumental
volcanic stone figure, represents the Earth’s simultaneous forces
of creation and destruction. As the body moves toward becoming a
monolith, its fractures persist, exposing the colonial wound that
runs through identity.

Through
this process, the work revisits Coatlicue within the context of
colonial modernity. After its discovery in 1790 in New Spain, the
sculpture was repeatedly buried and exhumed, made visible only
through a colonial gaze.

Activated
once each day, the installation begins when the artist lights a
series of candles placed throughout the space. The final candle is
positioned before a flame sensor, triggering the video loop. On
screen, the body appears suspended between solidity and volatility.
Operating as a contemporary smoking mirror, the installation presents
identity as transitory, fragmented, and historically mediated.

Guest Artist Presentation: 'Middle Woman: A conversation about art practice as a bridge of manifestation' by Ana Vera
From a spiritual point of view, art has always been linked to religion and spirituality but in the contemporary art world

this perspective isn't necessarily so. Whether we create art from a social justice or personal and emotional perspective, art can always trace us back to spirit if we follow the thread of the heart. As an art practitioner and spiritual seeker, Ana Vera shares from her own life experience and artistic practice, how she came to perceive the spiritual in how she creates art as well as how she lives her own life.

SHADOW OF VENUS

video installation, 3 channel, 20 min, audio, no language, 2023, Mexico/Germany

Inspired
by my personal journey of decolonization, having gained a cultural
distance that allows me to see myself and my roots,
I've embarked on
a quest filled with questions only my ancestors may hold the answers
to. Decolonization is to meet our ancestors. Decolonization is a spiritual pratice.
This
is a film about a mestiza
questioning her identity as she confronts the shadows of forgotten
histories, only to awaken the latent memories of her ancestors, long
stored within the recesses of her body, mind, and spirit.

Shadow
of Venus is an experimental short film set in the
epistemological space of the internalized coloniality of a mestiza,
where the sense of self relies on the Eurocentric and patriarchal
worldview perpetuated in Abya Yala. Displayed as a 3-channel video
installation, the film acknowledges the interrelation between the
human body and celestial bodies, in this case, Venus and the Moon, as
they share periodicities and cycles: the lunar and the menstrual, the
Venusian and the gestational. Through introspective meditation, the
mestiza immerses herself in a spiritual journey in synchronicity with
the moon and Venus, where the mind, body, and spirit become
territories in dispute.

The
installation comprises three projections, with screens positioned
adjacent, aligning their edges. The middle screen adheres to a 16:9
format, while the side screens adopt a 4:3 ratio. The middle screen
is installed parallel to a wall or creating a frontal position for
the viewer, while the side screens are subtly inwardly rotated,
forming a composition reminiscent of a triptych. In front of the
screens, a circular jute carpet holds a bowl of water at the center,
surrounded by flowers, smaller water bowls, and candles.
Meditation cushions serve as seating. The installation is designed
for an open audio experience, though it is also compatible with
headphones.

In Güneş Theatre, TERRARISTA TV experiments with artistic practices to counter the haunting of the residues and presences of the German colonial era with rituals. In contrast to the former colonial school in Witzenhausen, we conjure up affects and use the forensics of archives as portals, creating symbolic analogies to the neglected space of the archive - a lament to dust, mold, cobwebs and unwound clocks.Terrarista TV was awarded a funding program by Hessen Film und Medien GmbH and is sponsored by the Kulturamt Stadt Kassel as well as Kunsthochschule Kassel to develop a multi-sensory, audiovisual installation in conversation with the former Deutsche Kolonialschule Witzenhausen and DITSL Witzenhausen to explore ways of dealing with German colonial heritage and its continuities.

LE PRINTEMS DU SACRE

stage design, three acts a 20 min, audio, 2024, Germany

visual composition Nigredo I. B, Le Printemps du Sacre

I was invited to create the video scenography for Le Printemps du Sacre, Studio Alaxpacha's first short ballet, which explores themes of transformation through a narrative of death, rebirth, and transcendence. Directed by Diana Mora, the piece is inspired by esoteric traditions and pays homage to Vaslav Nijinsky.

My work involved translating astral landscapes and symbolic encounters into a moving visual language. The visuals were developed using a combination of AI-generated imagery, original footage, and stock material, composed and animated in Resolume and Premiere.

Working closely with Diana, who shared her own astral journey as a narrative guide, I shaped each scene to support the choreography and spiritual atmosphere of the work.

Written & directed by Diana Mora
Visual design: Alejandra Montoya
Video technique: Midjourney, Runway, Krea, Flame fractals, Stock material and original footage composed in Resolume & Premiere

DETECT CLASSIC FESTIVAL 2024

KOKON STAGE

video mapping, stage design, 2024, Germany

    Video Autoplay Responsive

        /* Contenedor flexible para hacer el video responsivo */
        .video-container {

            width: 100%;
            max-width: 100vw; /* Máximo ancho de la pantalla */
            padding-top: 56.25%; /* Relación de aspecto 16:9 */
        }

        .video-container iframe {
            position: absolute;
            top: 0;
            left: 0;
            width: 100%;
            height: 100%;
        }

I created the video mapping and live visuals for two nights at the Kokon stage during Detect Classic Festival 2024. Each visual was designed with AI to evoke the atmosphere of a cocoon or chrysalis, aligning with the stage’s theme and making it feel like a living entity.
Thanks to Lange.Weile Kollektiv for the trust.

Tarot insights for Gaia I & II

video collage, english, no subtitles, 2020

Tarot opens doors to new narratives, intuition, and inner vision—tools we need in a time of planetary awakening. Gaia, the living Earth, has spoken: "I am here, I am alive, and change must come." But what does the Tarot reveal in response?
This work, created during the pandemic, draws inspiration from Lynn Randolph’s Cyborg (1989), merging divination with ecological urgency.

Presented as part of Terrarista TV: The earth strikes back during Kunsthochschule Kassel’s Alternative Rundgang (2020).
